NHS 111 is a service which has been introduced to make it easier for you to access local NHS healthcare services. You can now call 111 when you need medical help fast, but it isn’t a 999 emergency.

NHS 111 is a fast and easy way to get the right help – wherever you are, and whatever the time.

You should call 111 if:

> you need medical help fast, but it's not a 999 emergency
> you think you need to go to A&E or another NHS urgent care service
> you don't know who to call, or you don't have a GP to call, or
> you require health information or reassurance about what to do next

NHS Direct

A comprehensive website and a 24 hour nurse-led telephone helpline providing confidential health care advice and information, as well as self-care options. The NHS Direct telephone number is 0845 4647

Nurse-led centres which offer immediate access to treatment for a number of problems such as strains, sprains, bites, minor burns, coughs, colds and contraceptive advice and treatment. They are generally open 8.00 am to 9.00 pm Mondays to Fridays, 10.00 am to 8.00 PM Saturdays and Sundays. Click here for details of your nearest Walk-in Centre.

Most are staffed by specialist nurses who can treat a wide range of minor injuries and problems. Waiting times will usually be shorter than in an A&E department. Click here for details of your local Minor Injuries Unit

Open 24 hours a day to treat people with serious injuries or illnesses. If your condition is less serious, you will wait longer to see a doctor. Click here to find your local A&E centre.

Your high street pharmacist can advise you on a range of medicines and remedies for everyday illnesses. Every pharmacy has details of late-opening pharmacies in the area.

To obtain a list of local dentists, contact the Primary Care Trust on (020) 7530 3500 Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm. You will also find details of local dentists on the NHS website at

Mental Health Services are available both in hospitals and in the community. Your GP can refer you to these services.

Community Health Services are provided in clinics, health centres or your home. Your GP can refer you to these services.

Social Services are provided by your local council and include home helps and meals on wheels.

You should only use this for serious medical emergencies. Please think before you call 999. Sending an ambulance to a call that is not an emergency could delay the response to a seriously ill patient. Patients who arrive at hospital by ambulance do not receive faster treatment.
